At the introdution, or traditional wedding (it is recognised as a cultural union), the bride introduces her groom to her family and clan and the groom’s clan brings the bride price. This will be followed by the giving away ceremony at which the bride is handed over to the groom’s family and they are then considered officially married.

Interestingly, the mothers of the bride and groom get to play no part in the introduction and a lot of the ladies actually stay inside the house as the ceremony is going on outside. The bride will be guided through the marriage process by a ‘important aunty’, usually her mother’s sister.
